Itacaré is a small surfing town in the North-Eastern State of Bahia. It is famous among sufers for having some of the best surf in Brazil. While that, the lively colonial town of about 15.000 inhabitants mixes the cultures of Afro-Brazil, Fishermen, Surfing, and Ecotourism. Itacaré has a great infrastructure for the traveler. There are plenty of restaurants with many diverse types of food, as well as a very vivid night life with cool bars and clubs. Many helpful and nice shops all around
The region of Itacaré is blessed with absolutely stunning beaches, a tropical climate, warm water all year long, and extremely consistent waves, as well as plenty of surfing peaks, from flat beach breaks that extend for miles to small sheltered beaches surrounded by hills and rainforest. The area also hosts some of the best preserved dense Atlantic Rain Forest areas in Brazil, with great tropical flora & fauna.
Main longboard peak in the region because of its mellow, long waves. Requires a drive on the road to Ilhéus + hike through some really great rainforest. For your first time there, a local guide is highly recommended to reach this spot. Engenhoca has an easy channel to paddle out. Protected from the typical summer northeast wind.
A short and heavy right hander and a longer left hander on sand bottom, remaining mostly unsurfed due to the long and steep trail to this beach. To get there, you will need a car to reach the access point, then an additional 20-30 minute hike in to the beach. A guide is strongly recommended when you go there for the first time!
A strong right-hander, that only shows up once in a while. While that, the left hander is more consistent, but less perfect. Overall, quite consistent waves. Early morning you got best chances for glass. You can get there through a 45 minutes walk from Itacaré. Take a guide and don’t take values!
Classical winter peak (May-Sep), when wind turns south. Endless beach breaks with more mellow waves on the outside, and tubing sand bars on the inside. Aware of heavy cross and rip currents, you really need to know what you do here! There is no infrastructure or people here, so if you get in trouble, you’ll be alone!
Miles of beach breaks, with all kinds of waves. Plus some reefs producing consistent waves in glassy low tide. You need a car to get here, and either pay entrance to drive to the beach or walk 15-minute from the main road. To surf an empty lineup, just walk south on the beach.
Home to the local surf scene. Very consistent short and heavy waves nearly all year. It’s always crowded with plenty of localism. If you’re not a acknowledged surf pro, stick to the rules, be friendly, and make friends first before you catch a wave.
We were surprised with the comfort and the convenience of this lodge! The location is excellent, and it's very well equipped, everything is new! It has an incredible semi-open living space with hammocks. Even better than the pictures! We have been very well cared for by Nígia who gave us 100% attention and many good local tips. The lodge is upstairs the Surf School EasyDrop, and the people from the school infected us with their surf vibes. They also gave us great hints about the best surfing peaks around. Highly recommended lodging! I'll be back soon.
